Wood is the most common fence we build in Jacksonville, and most of the calls we get are to fix a wood fence someone else put up two summers ago. The failure is almost always the same: posts that were driven into sandy soil instead of set in concrete, so the first tropical storm leans the whole run.
We build wood fences on posts cemented below grade, with proper spacing for our soil, and we leave a gap at the bottom so the pickets are not wicking groundwater all year. You choose the style — standard privacy, board-on-board, shadowbox, or dog-ear picket — and the height, within what your city and HOA allow.
Wood is not the right call for every yard. If you want zero maintenance, vinyl or aluminum will serve you better, and we will say so before you spend a dollar. If you do want wood, expect to re-seal it every two to three years to keep it from graying — we will tell you exactly how at the walkthrough.
